Boudoir portrait of woman in flowing dress during guided posing session by Shelly Erwich Photography serving Seattle, Bellevue, Renton and Kent areas

No, you do not need to know how to pose for boudoir photos.

You will be guided through every pose, every movement, and even your expressions during your entire session. You are never expected to show up knowing what to do. That’s MY job.

Most of my clients have never done anything like this before, and they still walk away with images they absolutely love, and knowing exactly how we got there. Sometimes poses feel so awkward, when in actuality, it may be elongating an area, or flexing muscles you didn’t remember you have.

Posing often feels different than it looks

One of the most surprising things for clients is that posing can feel a little unusual in the moment.

You might be twisting slightly, shifting your weight in a way you normally wouldn’t, or holding a position that feels a bit exaggerated. But all of those small adjustments are intentional.

They help create length, shape, and flow in the final image.

What feels a little awkward in the moment often looks effortless and natural in the photograph.

Sometimes it starts with something simple

In the image above, we weren’t doing anything complicated.

I simply asked her to grab the hem of the dress and start twisting her body with it. That was it.

From there, we just played with the movement, letting the fabric flow, adjusting slightly as we went, and allowing the pose to develop naturally instead of forcing anything. And yes, we giggled like little girls playing with fun dresses! We even have images where she was jumping just to make the dress fly!

That’s how most of a session feels. It’s not about memorizing poses or getting everything perfect. It’s about small direction, natural movement, and building from one simple idea into another.

You don’t need experience to look amazing

You don’t need to have modeling experience or know what to do in front of a camera.

Boudoir sessions are designed for real women who may feel a little nervous at first, and that’s completely normal, especially if you’ve been wondering things like whether you should lose weight before a boudoir photoshoot.

With the right guidance, lighting, and posing, everything comes together naturally. What you’re seeing in the final images isn’t experience, it’s direction, trust, and a process that works.

You don’t need to know how to pose

You don’t need experience, and you don’t need to have it all figured out before you walk in.

All you need to do is show up.

From there, I’ll guide you through every movement, every expression, and every moment, so you can relax into the experience instead of worrying about how you look.

You’ve already seen what that looks like above, one simple direction can turn into something completely different on camera.

I’ll also show you the back of the camera throughout, so you can see exactly what’s working as we go.

And by the end of your session, posing will be the last thing on your mind.
