10 Things to do Before Your Boudoir Photoshoot
Let’s Get You Ready to Feel Amazing in Front of the Camera
Getting ready for a boudoir photoshoot can be a mix of “Oh my gosh I’m doing this!” and “Wait… am I really doing this?” And honestly? That’s totally normal. This whole experience is about celebrating who you are right now — not stressing over perfection. Whether it’s your first shoot or you’re back for another round, a little prep goes a long way toward helping you feel more relaxed, more ready, and even a little excited.
So, I’ve put together a list of ten easy things you can do before your boudoir session that’ll make the day smoother, more fun, and so much more you. Let’s make this feel good from the start.
1. Talk to Your Photographer (That’s Me!)
Let’s get on the same page. I always send out a short pre-session questionnaire after we chat, so I can get a sense of your personality, style, and any little nerves you might have. If something is on your mind, from stretch marks to posing ideas, let’s talk it through ahead of time. Nothing is too weird, too small or too big, PLUS I’ve probably heard it before!
2. Pick Your Outfits — and Pack a Few Extras
Bring what makes you feel good on you. Lingerie is great, but so are bodysuits, oversized sweaters, or your partner’s favorite shirt. Things don’t always photograph the way we imagine, so options are your friend. I also have a few studio pieces we can use if something inspires us in the moment.
One of my best tips is to head over to a professional women’s apparel shop like Victoria’s Secret and get fitted for a beautiful new set that feels like it was made just for you. It makes such a difference in how comfortable you feel, especially when you’re not stressing about anything slipping or bunching up in all the wrong places. Later, when you’re flipping through the photos we created together, you’ll remember exactly how incredible you felt wearing an outfit that truly suited and fit you, and feel like the absolute queen you are.
Stay tuned, I’m working on a full blog series about what to wear and where to find it.
3. Take Care of Your Skin (But Don’t Go Overboard)
A good moisturizer the night before is all you need. Skip anything harsh, no peels, no brand-new skincare adventures. We want your skin happy, not angry. Glowy, not red.
4. Drink More Water (Like, Now)
This one’s boring but it works. Hydration makes a huge difference in your skin, your energy, and how you feel in general. Bonus: it can also help reduce any puffiness if that’s something you worry about.
5. Get Some Sleep (Seriously)
Try to get a solid 7–8 hours the night before. You’ll feel better, look more refreshed, and trust me, makeup looks better when you’re not running on fumes. No shame in a nap the day before either!
6. Play Around in the Mirror
This doesn’t need to be a full rehearsal, just take a few minutes to notice what you love when you smile, tilt your head, or shift your hips. No pressure. We’ll go over posing together during the shoot, but a little “mirror time” helps build your comfort and body awareness.
7. Handle Grooming Early
If you’re planning to wax, shave, or get a haircut, try to do it at least 3 days before your shoot. That gives any redness or irritation a chance to chill out.
7a. Coloring Your Hair? Give It Time
If you’re touching up color or getting highlights, aim for a week ahead. Some dyes can transfer to skin, clothing, or my white bedding or walls (ask me how I know).
8. Pack a Shoot Bag
Start gathering things a few days before your shoot so you’re not scrambling the morning of. Pack anything you might want for your session, jewelry, props, accessories, heels, your favorite lipstick. Trust me, it’s much easier to overpack than to realize you’ve forgotten something important on the way out the door. It’s always better to roll in with a small, full suitcase just in case, than to miss out on using something you really wanted to include.
I don’t keep shoes at the studio, so if you have a pair you love, bring them along. And if not, barefoot is always a beautiful option. This is boudoir, after all.
9. Stretch It Out
Start stretching a few days before the shoot, or at least the morning of. Some of these poses are a little bendy, and you might discover muscles you forgot you had (you’re welcome!). Loose muscles = deeper poses = less soreness tomorrow.
You’d be surprised at how beautiful some of the most awkward poses can look, trust me, you’ll definitely feel them! Don’t worry though, I’ll guide you through every pose and demo them myself, so we’re in it together the whole way! We can compare aches the next day!
10. Eat a Real Meal Before You Come
Don’t skip food, even if you’re nervous. A good meal with protein, like a couple eggs for instance, will keep your energy up and your blood sugar steady. You’ll feel stronger and more grounded, and yes, you can still pose your booty off with a full stomach, you’ll just do it with more energy!
Final Thought:
This whole experience is meant to feel good. So, take a little time to prep, not to become someone different, but to support you in showing up fully. You’re investing in yourself, and that deserves a little care. I’ll take it from there.
